In my opinoin, yes there is.
You see, if Holmes was to make out with Watson, the film would be ruined. And Holmes' image would be messed up.

I defy you to find any reference to such a thing in the Canon. Maybe in the work of Gilette...but in the Canon, no.

Yes, I know. The most described pipe is a curved pipe, which in the films, was a calabash. That is why we used it. But, even when you answer calabash, it says this:
Although film representations have varied and the stories are somewhat unclear, the most associated type of pipe is the calabash, which was originally carved from a gourd. The calabash became associated with Holmes through actor William Gillette, who wanted a pipe that would not interfere with his famous profile or with clear articulation.

very lovable as Dr. Watson and funny...my favorite one actually as he is so charming in the role. He reminds me of a Doctor I actually had once. I wish his autobiography would be published. I have read excerpts and it is packed full of little tidbits from the Golden Era of Hollywood.

Basil Rathbone is fantastic for Holmes. You know it never occured to me but he DID have the right nose for it! He's a fab actor and looks like Holmes. Watson (played by Nigel Bruce) I thought was quite simple.... and that made his very loveable and hilarious. They were in my opinion the best!
