Have you ever noticed all of the similarities between Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Gregory House? They have so much in common, you can't help but think he was actually based on Sherlock Holmes.

Similarities
Sherlock Holmes can deduce a lot about a person by just looking at them. House can deduce a diagnoses by just looking at the patient.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle based Sherlock Holmes on a doctor. Gregory House is a doctor.
Holmes' name is like the word "Homes" House is another word for "Home"
Sherlock Holmes went against dangerous criminals. House fights dangerous diseases.
Sherlock was addicted to cocaine. House is addicted to Vicoden, to help his leg.
Sherlock calls his best friend by his last name. (Watson) House calls his best friens by his last name (Wilson)
Holmes' attitude is generally arrogant. Arrogance is one of House's well known traits.
Sherlock was lazy when he was not working on a case. House is lazy until he has a case that interests him.
Sherlock's best friend, Watson, had a wound in his leg. (even though it used to be on his shoulder.) House had a wound in his leg which caused a medical
problem.
Sherlock Holmes loves music and plays the violin. House also loves music, and plays the guitar and the piano.
Sherlock Holmes lives at 221b Baker Street. House lives in an apartment, numbered 221b. The address hasn't been revealed.


Differences
Holmes was well known for his courage.
House is considered a coward.
Sherlock hated to guess, it was his most rare habit. He wouldn't tell the answer until he had all the evidence.
House guesses alot, trying to narrow down a diagnoses.
Holmes smoked alot. (With a pipe) Especially on difficult cases.
House doesn't smoke as a habit, but has been seen with a cigarette or cigar.
Holmes pretty much hates women.
House loves women.



What references do the Sherlockian stories have that could be relative towards house? What references do the House episodes have?

  • In the first episode of House, the clients name is Adler. The same last name as Irene Adler.
  • In the seventh episode of the second season, we find out that House lives in an apartment numbered 221b.
  • In the 24th episode of the second season, House is shot and the shooter is credited to be "Jack Moriarty" the same last name as Sherlock Holmes' nemesis "James Moriarty."
  • In the eighth episode of season three, House gives his team a challenge to see who can solve a case without him, and he puts the diagnosis in an envelope and wrote on the front 'The game is a itchy foot', just like the famous quote "The game is afoot"
  • In the 11th episode of season 5, House throws out a gift that turns out to be an antique medical text written by Dr. Joseph Bell. Bell is the doctor that Arthur Conan Doyle based Sherlock Holmes. Later in the episode Wilson tries to explain away the gift by telling the team a story about a woman House loved, named Irene Adler. Irene Adler was a famous Sherlock Holmes character.

Wow - I've never seen House. Had heard there are one or two Holmes references but didn't realise that many. Love the page. I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that Hugh Laurie was up for playing Holmes in a TV show at one point(details on scapbook page) Might try and tempt a mate of mine who loves House onto the site !Thanks - really interesting.
